What is Silverpoint?

The art of silverpoint, or more broadly, metalpoint, is an ancient medium that reached its peak during the Renaissance. Using gold, silver, copper or other metals in the form of thin wire inserted into a stylus, the artist draws fine lines onto a specially prepared, lightly abrasive surface. Historically, vellum or parchment made of animal skins were used. These materials were stretched and scraped thin and then, covered with a ground made of white pigment mixed with a binder resulting in a primer similar to gesso. The marks made by metalpoint tend to be very light and difficult to erase, but at the same time are very precise. With patience and a steady hand, the artist is able to create subtle value variation by building up cross hatched layers. Over time, metal point (excluding pure gold) changes slightly in color and density as the metals oxidize due to environmental conditions. These changes often add to the richness and complexity of the drawing.
